Perhaps your past counseling experience was similar to mine.
The counselor asked me, “So how do you feel?” She asked me this same question four sessions in a row. I finally said, “I feel terrible, or I wouldn’t be here.” She did nothing for me. My problem was not solved. No advice was given. I received no benefit.
Years later a friend introduced me to the Arno Profile System of Counseling. I was astounded. My husband was astounded. So, we started referring others to counselors who utilized the Arno Profile System. Eventually, we both sought certification ourselves.
Here’s What we Learned.
Personality tests didn’t measure my core wants and desires. They only told me how I presented myself to others. They assessed me from the outside and hope to define the inner man. Personality is like the clothes you wear and to some extent your personality can be changed to fit each new environment.
Alternately, the Arno Profile System determines the core of what you want and expect from your world. It defines the bones or the structure of who you are from the inside and then explains why you chose the outer personality that you wear.
For example, would you wear a black-tie outfit to work in your garden or go to the beach? Well, may be for a garden or beachside wedding, but usually you wear different clothing for different events. You can change your clothing. Your bone structure cannot be changed.
Temperament cannot be Changed.
You cannot change your height, or the width of your shoulders or hips, or the size of your skull. With plastic surgery some changes can be made. Diet can alter appearance only to a degree. Your bones are your bones. You learned to wear clothing that compliments your bones and your skin tone.
In the same way, temperament is fixed and predetermined. And to a certain degree, you can wear different personalities to fit a variety of environments.
Character develops over Time.
On the other hand, your character developed within your environment. As you grew and moved through life, some behaviors and expressions were accepted in your family, your circles of community, and your society. Eventually, you learned from your environment what fit and what did not fit. You learned to hide some aspects of your temperament and to lean on other aspects of your temperament to fit in, to win, or to survive.
Personality is Chosen.
Who wants to just survive? In our world of super models, movie stars, and business moguls, expectations for success are high. As early as middle school or perhaps even in your younger family of origin, you learned to wear different behaviors to fit each new life scenario. Thus, your budding personality developed as a way to make your temperament accepted in your environment.
The Arno Profile System measures the “bones” of your temperament.
The Arno Profile System report describes what you want from your environment, and how you most naturally express yourself to your environment. Just like knowing your bone structure and your height help you choose better clothing, knowing your temperament helps you find people and situations of life that are best “suited” to fit your inner you.
